Webinar proposed by: ESCP Business SchoolMasterclass "The Dark Side of the Energy Transition: The Curse of Unintended Consequences"
The energy transition toward sustainability and climate neutrality is widely regarded as crucial for the future of our planet’s ecology, and thus for the health, wealth, and wellbeing of future generations. This transition is not only necessary; it is extremely urgent. The effects of climate change are already being felt, with profound impacts on ecosystems and societies. The dangers of failing to transition are clear. Less obvious, however, are the disconcerting dark sides that may also accompany the energy transition as it is currently unfolding. We must confront these realities: new and untested geopolitical dependencies are emerging, security concerns may intensify, and the ecological and societal impact of critical material mining can be severe, harming local communities. The costs and benefits of this transition may be distributed unequally, with societal tensions or even increased poverty as a result.
While this may sound bleak, it should serve as a call for responsibility and vigilance. Only by recognising that the energy transition may have unintended consequences can we begin to address them and chart a better course toward an energy system that is robust, sustainable, and just.
